Blood Vessels;
The student will be able to: 1) Classify epithelia into different types using either light or electron microscopy. 2) Identify, by light or electron microscopy, the various characteristics of epithelial cells. 3) Identify the various intracellular and cell surface specializations of epithelia in electron micrographs and briefly state their functions. 4) Distinguish, by electron microscopy, the different type of junctional complexes present in epithelial cells. 5) Identify the different type of epithelial glands and distinguish the type of product produced by each.;
Small and Large Intestines;
The student will be able to: 1) Describe the histological distribution of the different types of lymphocytes (T vs B vs other); discuss their origin, life span, capacity for differentiation and their circulatory pathways. 2) Describe the general characteristics and functions of lymphoid tissue macrophages or other accessory cells and natural killer cells. 3) Describe the distribution, structure and function of diffuse lymphoid tissues and lymphoid nodules; given an appropriate light microscopic preparation, identify the tonsils, appendix and Peyer's patches. 4) Describe the histological features of the thymus including the cellular constituents of its cortex and medulla and its blood vascularization. List the components of the blood-thymus barrier. 5) Describe the general organization of lymph nodes, including the microscopic structure of their framework, cellular constituents and blood/lymph vascularization. 6) Describe the general organization of the spleen including the microscopic structure of the white pulp, red pulp and marginal zone of the spleen as well as the cellular components in each region. 7) Describe the vascular pattern of the spleen; differentiate between the theories of "open" and "closed" circulation. 8) Describe the unique structural characteristics of the tonsil. 9) Distinguish between nodular and diffuse lymphoid tissue. Describe the structural features and organization of Peyer's patches and the appendix.;

The student will be able to: 1) Understand the principles and operation of the light microscope and understand the application of the electron microscope. 2) Predict the anticipated color, pattern of staining and the cellular components that are stained with the common stains used in light microscopy. 3) Identify the structures visualized in the cells and at cell surfaces using light microscopy and briefly describe their function. 4) Recognize the stages of mitosis. 5) Identify the cell features and subcellular organelles in electron micrographs.
